NEW YORK. - Rembrandt van Rijn’s Saint James the Greater was sold for $25.8 million at Sotheby’s N.Y. Important Old Master Paintings auction. George Wachter, Vice Chairman and Co-Chairman of Sotheby’s Old Master Paintings Department Worldwide said,“We are absolutely thrilled with this morning’s results. With a first session total of $96.9 million we are poised to break the record for any sale of Old Master Paintings, which was set at Sotheby’s London in July 2002. The $25.8 millionpaid for Rembrandt’s Saint James the Greater is the second highest price ever paid for a work by this master. Two bidders fought for it this morning and it finally sold to an anonymous buyer bidding through a Sotheby’s representative.” The record for Rembrandt is $28,688,612 paid at Christie's London, December 2000.
